It was school trip week last week, folks, and for me that meant a week on Gili Air learning how to Scuba dive! Here’s a highlights reel of the trip…
This was my first time ever to go diving, and it was awesome! We had to watch a lot of videos and do a lot of knowledge reviews in preparation for our first dive, but it was worth it. Our dive center was called Blue Marine Dive, and my instructor was an Austro-Italian named Verena (‘V’ for short). My first dive was just off Gili Air, at a site named Hans Reef. We went under, did some underwater skills (clearing regulator, clearing flooded mask, etc.) and then explored. It was sooooo awesome! Over the course of the week we went to dive sites all over the three Gilis, and we saw beautiful coral, loads of colourful fish, turtles and a couple of sharks! I went to a max. depth of 30 metres, and became certified after 4 days of training. It was awesome.
Exploring Gili Air
Gili Air was such a beautiful island, and luckily I got to explore a large part of it. It’s pretty small, and you can walk around it in about 1½ hours (which I did). A lot of people hired bikes and cycled around the island. I didn’t: 1 hour’s worth was 100,00 rp. Boo! (Funnily enough, every single person who went out on the bikes got a horrible sunburn, so I think I dodged the bullet on that one!). For one of the activities, we went for a scavenger hunt around the island. We got to see a load of cool things, like the island’s only mosque, and the harbour. (My team won the scavenger hunt by a matter of minutes. The prize: a Blue Marine t-shirt).
The last night was a performance night. All the instructors and the dive groups did a piece. The evening was kicked off by a fire dance by Liam, one of the instructors. It was epiiiiiiiiic! Apparently he had learned a month earlier, but he was full pro! After that, the each dive group performed. Musa’s group recited a poem, Toby’s group did funny skits, my group performed a song, Matt’s group did a rap and Liam’s group roasted his shortness. Then the instructors performed a few songs: an ‘Under the Sea’ remix, then Matt sang a couple of country songs. It was such a great way to end the trip.
I got so lucky with the people who went on this trip. I made so many new friends, all of who I absolutely loved spending time with. The three JIS teachers that accompanied us on our trip, Mr Schafer, Mr Eckardt and Ms Cook were really the best. They were such great organisers and friends. My dive instructor, V, really was amazing. She made learning to dive really fun, and showed us so much beauty in the water. I am so grateful for all the people I went to Gili Air with: they made the trip.
